  • A builder and roofer has been ordered to do 180 hours of community service after being found guilty of dumping asbestos sheeting in someone else's skip, posing a health and safety risk to children at a local school.
  • LCH Contracts, which was recently fined £70,000 for exposing employees to asbestos is to appeal part of the penalty, it has been reported.Managing director of the company, Lee Hipgrave, told the Echo he ploughed nearly £100,000 of his own money into defending the company and claims it did everything to prevent the workforce being at risk from inhalation.
  • Two firms have been fined a total of £18,000 after asbestos was found during filming of BBC series Fame Academy.Producers Endemol and property manager Foilhope admitted breaching safety regulations by exposing asbestos while filming at the show's London base. Government safety inspector Emma Brown said site workers were "needlessly exposed" to asbestos in 2002 and 2003. But no Fame Academy participants were believed to have been exposed to the potentially fatal substance.
